چکیده

In the previous paper the technical aspects of the mucin-clot prevention test which was standardized by McClean (1) have been described. Friou and Wenner (2) using the mucin-clot prevention test have demonstrated the clinical significance of an inhibitory substance in human serum capable of neutralizing an enzyme elaborated by a strain of hemolytic streptococcus. The amount of inhibitory substance was shown by them to be greater in the sera of patients with rheumatic fever than in patients early in the course of uncomplicated hemolytic streptococcal infections or normal individuals. A brief historical background of the work preceding that of Friou and Wenner has been presented in the previous paper. The purpose of this paper is to report the clinical application of the muein-clot prevention test in the determination of the antihyaluronidase titre of sera of patients with rheumatic fever, hemolytic streptococcal infections, miscellaneous other diseases, and normal individuals.

Serologic Response to Streptococcal Hemolysin and Hyaluronidase in Streptococcal and Rheumatic Infection.

Although it has as yet not been possible to demonstrate the specific role of a causative organism in rheumatic fever, there has been considerable epidemiologic (1) and serologic (2) evidence of some relationship between the hemolytic streptococcus and this disease. Studies of both cellular and extracellular substances of the hemolytic streptococcus have with rare exceptions shown that groups of...

Serum inhibition of streptococcal diphosphopyridine nucleotidase in uncomplicated streptococcal pharyngitis and in rheumatic fever.

One of the recently described extracellular products of Group A streptococci is diphosphopyridine nucleotidase (DPNase) (1). This enzyme has received attention as a substance of possible importance in the etiology of either rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis because a) it was isolated from cardiotoxic fractions of supernates of broth cultures of Group A streptococci (2, 3) and b) almost all ...

Differences in antibody response to streptococcal antigens in children with rheumatic and non-rheumatic mitral valve disease.

The usefulness of streptococcal antibody tests anti-streptolysin 0 (ASO), anti-desoxyribonuelease B (anti-DNAse B), and anti-group A carbohydrate (A-antibody) in differentiating rheumatic from nonrheumatic mitral disease was explored. Sera from 154 children with mitral disease were studied. Fifteen of 17 patients with chronic mitral insufficiency (MI) following acute rheumatic fever manifested ...

Rheumatic fever: autoantibodies against a variety of cardiac, nuclear, and streptococcal antigens.

OBJECTIVE To measure antibody titres to cardiac, nuclear, and streptococcal antigens in different groups of rheumatic fever (n = 60) and control subjects (n = 80) with the aim of identifying cross reactive antigens of potential laboratory diagnostic value. METHODS Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), immunocytochemical, and electrophoretic techniques were used to measure titres of anti...

Skin Reactions to Nucleoprotein of Streptococcus Scarlatinae in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Rheumatic Fever.

The skin reactions to various products of the hemolytic streptococci have been studied by a number of observers, and attempts have been made to correlate the results of such tests with various clinical manifestations of streptococcal infection. In the present investigation the skin reactions to varying amounts of nucleoprotein derived from a strain of Streptococcus scarlatinae were studied in 2...
